In 2006 the construction of the South Interoceanic highway linking the Brazilian Amazon to the Pacific ports of Peru was started. Five years later, in July 2011, the Continental Bridge, in the Peruvian Amazon city of Puerto Maldonado, capital of Madre de Dios, is inaugurated. The inauguration of the bridge represents the completion of the work on the road, which connects the two oceans in South America, and tears the Amazon rainforest violently apart.
