Brazilian organization develops a standardization of avoided deforesting projects and intends to have it employed in tropical countries. There are already projects underway in the Amazon Rainforest.

Payments for environmental services (PES) are capable of ‘buying out’ more than half of predicted Amazonian deforestation. But the institutional conditions necessary for an efficient and equitable PES system are not adequate, reducing this figure by 75 percent.

Every year, during the dry season in the Amazon, Nelci Aparecida de Queiroz sets fire on her small property in order to be able to plant. She knows that the use of fire does not make the land more fertile, but she cannot find any other way to make pasture from the forest and to clean the area to plant corn and coffee.See vídeo.
